A finance guy who reads his own lab results like a balance sheet.
I'm Michael Hofer. I have lived with Type 1 diabetes for more than 40 years. I run the finances of a billion-dollar company by day, and I write about metabolic health because I nearly got mine wrong while convinced I was doing everything right.
What I am
Someone who has had a continuous glucose monitor on his arm for years, an insulin pump on his belt, and a spreadsheet habit that predates both. I am analytical by training and by temperament, and I do not accept a health claim without asking what mechanism sits behind it.
I have written eight books on diabetes, weight management, and metabolic health, and several more on mergers and acquisitions and finance. This site, and the book behind it, are the most personal.
What I am not
A physician, a dietitian, or a licensed health professional of any kind. Nothing here is medical advice, and none of it should replace guidance from your doctor or care team.
What worked for me may not work for you. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol, the changes in my book can affect your medication needs, so make them only with your doctor in the loop. I say this on every page because I mean it.
How I think about health
Mechanism over mysticism
If I recommend something, I can tell you why it works in the body. If I can't, I won't recommend it.
One system, not three diagnoses
Glucose, lipids, and blood pressure are readouts of the same metabolic engine. Tune the engine and the gauges move together.
Measure, don't guess
A sensor and a spreadsheet beat willpower. Data should coach you, not judge you.
